European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has openly endorsed U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a more cost-effective and dependable energy source compared to traditional pipeline gas from neighboring suppliers.
“LNG from the U.S. is more affordable and better than pipeline gas from right next door,” von der Leyen stated, underscoring the growing preference within the EU for diversifying its energy imports away from politically volatile regions.

Her comments come as Europe continues to recalibrate its energy mix following recent geopolitical tensions that have exposed vulnerabilities tied to reliance on pipeline gas, particularly from Russia.

In response, the EU has significantly increased LNG imports from the United States, which are seen as a more flexible and geopolitically secure alternative.
Von der Leyen’s position also aligns with broader EU goals to reduce dependency on single suppliers and transition to more sustainable, resilient energy systems. U.S. LNG, while transported over long distances, has become increasingly competitive due to improved global infrastructure, favorable pricing, and stable diplomatic relations.
