Severe flooding and relentless rainfall have devastated communities in northern China, leaving a trail of destruction across Beijing’s Miyun District and parts of Hebei Province. As of Monday morning, at least two people have been confirmed dead in Miyun, with more than 4,000 residents urgently evacuated as floodwaters surged through the area.

Triggered by days of torrential rain, the disaster has overwhelmed rivers, caused deadly landslides, and swept away vehicles.

In Hebei Province, a village near Chengde was hit by a powerful landslide that killed four people, while eight remain missing, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Two additional deaths were reported in the province over the weekend due to flood-related incidents.

In Miyun District, rescue teams worked tirelessly through the night to reach stranded residents. Emergency crews evacuated flood victims, including 48 people trapped in an elderly care facility. Many were pulled from inundated buildings by boat, some carrying their pets and personal belongings as the muddy water continued to rise.

Authorities have placed Beijing under its highest-level flood warning and its second-highest rain warning, with forecasts predicting the storm could continue into Tuesday morning. Streets have turned into rivers, and infrastructure has been severely strained under the pressure of the continuous downpour.

“I’ve never seen so much water before,” said 67-year-old Cui Xueji, a lifelong resident of Taishitun village in Miyun. “We did some preparations, but we had no idea that there would be this much,” he added, as he carefully waded through floodwaters in flip-flops.

With emergency responders on high alert and weather warnings still in place, residents are being urged to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, and follow official safety instructions. The full scale of the damage is still being assessed, but the impact is already being felt deeply across the region, as communities face one of the most intense storms in recent memory.
