At least 14 people, including women and children, were killed on Thursday evening in a deadly ambush near Chirang village, located in the Mangor district of Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State, Nigeria.

The victims were returning from the weekly market in Bokkos town when their vehicle came under attack by suspected armed herders, whom community leaders have identified as Fulani militants.

The tragic incident has reignited fears in the region, which has long suffered from recurring cycles of violence. The Bokkos Cultural Development Forum (BCDF) Vanguard condemned the ambush, describing it as part of a broader and sustained effort to displace indigenous communities in central Plateau.

“This is another painful reminder of the insecurity our people face daily,” said BCDF Chairman Farmasum Fuddang. He noted that the attack occurred just two days after another young man was killed in the same vicinity, adding to an already grim tally.

According to the Forum, nearly 100 people have been killed in the area over the past two years, including more than 60 in a brutal mass attack on Christmas Eve in 2023.

BCDF also raised alarm over reports from local residents who claim to have seen large groups of armed militants moving toward nearby villages. The group said that the Nigerian military had confirmed a gun battle with the attackers as of the time of reporting, although full details on the confrontation have yet to be released.

The ambush is the latest in a series of violent episodes that continue to plague Plateau State, where ethnic tensions, land disputes, and insecurity have created a deeply volatile environment. As the death toll rises and fear spreads among local populations, community leaders are once again calling for urgent government intervention and lasting security reforms to protect lives and restore peace.
