For the first time in over seven weeks, Russian and Ukrainian negotiators convened in Istanbul on Wednesday in a renewed attempt to chart a path toward peace, as global pressure mounts—particularly from U.S. President Donald Trump—for a diplomatic resolution to the war or the imposition of harsher sanctions on Moscow.

The high-stakes meeting opened with remarks from Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who expressed hope that both parties would build on the groundwork laid during their last round of talks in June.

“The ultimate goal here is, of course, a ceasefire that will pave the way for peace,” Fidan said, underscoring Turkey’s continued role as a neutral mediator in the conflict that has gripped Eastern Europe since February 2022.

Ukrainian officials see the Istanbul talks as a potential springboard for a direct summit between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Such a meeting, they believe, is essential for achieving a meaningful political breakthrough.

“Ukraine has consistently advocated for a leaders’ meeting. We were ready for it yesterday. We are ready today. And we will be ready tomorrow,” said Rustem Umerov, head of the Ukrainian delegation, in a post on Telegram. “Such a meeting could unlock real political progress. Russia must demonstrate its readiness.”

While recent negotiations held in May and June resulted in humanitarian gestures—including the exchange of thousands of prisoners of war and fallen soldiers—the sessions were brief and failed to produce tangible progress toward ending the war.

Now, with the diplomatic window open once again and international scrutiny intensifying, hopes are cautiously rising that the Istanbul talks could be the first step toward ending a conflict that has devastated regions, displaced millions, and drawn in competing global powers.
