As widespread flight delays continue to frustrate travelers across Russia, authorities at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport have taken an unusual step—handing out mattresses to stranded passengers forced to sleep inside the terminal.
The move comes amid growing public discontent over persistent delays and cancellations that have left countless travelers stuck in limbo, often overnight, with limited accommodation options. In response, airport officials have begun offering basic sleeping provisions in an attempt to ease the discomfort of those caught in the chaos.

Images and videos shared online show rows of travelers resting on makeshift bedding laid out across terminal floors—a stark visual of the mounting challenges facing Russia’s aviation sector. Though the gesture is being viewed by some as a practical short-term solution, others see it as a symbol of deeper systemic issues plaguing the country’s air travel industry.

While no official reason has been given for the wave of delays, aviation experts suggest a combination of weather-related disruptions, logistical bottlenecks, and staffing shortages could be to blame. Whatever the cause, the impact is being felt most by passengers left to cope with extended wait times and limited resources.
Sheremetyevo, one of Russia’s busiest airports, has seen a particularly high volume of affected flights in recent days. By distributing mattresses, airport management appears to be acknowledging the scope of the disruption—if not solving it outright.
