On the 12th day of an escalating and deadly conflict between Iran and Israel, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that a ceasefire was officially in effect, calling on both nations to honor the truce. Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT. PLEASE DO NOT VIOLATE IT!”

According to the U.S. president, the ceasefire agreement was structured as a staggered, 24-hour process. Iran was expected to initiate the pause in hostilities at approximately 04:00 GMT on Tuesday, with Israel slated to reciprocate 12 hours later.

Trump framed the truce as a diplomatic breakthrough aimed at halting a war that has already claimed hundreds of lives in Iran and at least two dozen in Israel. However, conflicting statements from both Iranian and Israeli officials quickly cast doubt on the stability and legitimacy of the ceasefire.

Only hours before Trump’s declaration, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated there was “no agreement” in place regarding a formal ceasefire or a full halt to military operations. He did, however, suggest that Iran would be willing to de-escalate if Israel ceased its “illegal aggression against the Iranian people” by 4 a.m. Tehran time.

Despite the proposed timetable, the hours leading up to the ceasefire were marked by fresh violence. Iranian state media reported multiple waves of missile launches targeting Israel, while Israeli emergency services confirmed that at least four people were killed in a series of Iranian strikes.

The Israeli military reported sirens sounding in northern regions, signaling continued incoming attacks even as the ceasefire deadline approached.

The absence of official confirmation from Tehran and Tel Aviv further clouds the truce’s legitimacy. While Trump’s announcement may reflect Washington’s efforts to broker a cooling of tensions, the facts on the ground tell a more complicated story—one where military engagements continue and diplomatic clarity remains elusive.
