Tensions in the Middle East reached a new boiling point on Monday after Israel launched a powerful airstrike on Evin Prison, Iran’s most notorious detention facility, located in northern Tehran. The strike, described by Israeli officials as one of their most intense attacks yet, targeted a site long seen as a symbol of the Islamic Republic’s repressive power.

Footage from the scene, released by Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, shows the aftermath of the attack, with visible damage to the prison compound. The video quickly gained traction on social media, as users across the world reacted to the bold strike on a facility known for its grim legacy.

Evin Prison has served as Iran’s primary detention center for political prisoners and security detainees since the 1979 revolution. Over the decades, it has come to embody the Islamic Republic’s harsh stance on dissent, frequently cited in human rights reports for its role in torture, secretive trials, and executions.

The facility also houses several foreign nationals and dual citizens, many of whom have been held on espionage or politically motivated charges.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar confirmed the strike in a post on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a video of an explosion outside a building bearing a sign for Evin Prison. Accompanying the video, Saar wrote: “Viva la libertad!”—a rallying cry for freedom that resonated with supporters of Iran’s opposition movement.

The attack comes just one day after the United States formally entered the growing conflict, signaling a significant shift in the regional power balance and amplifying fears of a broader war. For Israel, the strike on Evin sends a pointed message—not only to Iran’s military command, but also to its political establishment and the global community watching closely.
