As Russia unleashes one of its deadliest bombardments on Kyiv since the start of the war, world leaders at the G7 summit in Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine by pledging fresh military and economic support.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at the summit venue nestled in the Canadian Rockies on Tuesday, just hours after Russian missiles killed at least 10 civilians in Ukraine’s capital in a dramatic escalation of the conflict.

The meeting, intended to bolster global cooperation, took on even greater urgency amid rising global tensions — including the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, which prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to leave the summit early and return to Washington.

Trump’s anticipated one-on-one meeting with Zelensky was consequently cancelled, adding a layer of uncertainty to an already tense diplomatic gathering.

Nevertheless, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed Zelensky with a strong display of solidarity. Carney announced a new Can$2 billion (approximately $1.47 billion USD) military aid package for Ukraine, which will include drones, helicopters, and other critical battlefield resources.

“This underscores the importance of standing in total solidarity with Ukraine,” Carney said, reaffirming Canada’s stance on holding Russia accountable.

He also emphasized the need for “maximum pressure against Russia” and joined the United Kingdom in unveiling new sanctions targeting Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” — vessels reportedly used to evade international restrictions on Russian oil exports.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed the sentiment, calling the sanctions a direct attack on the financial arteries of Putin’s war efforts. “These sanctions strike right at the heart of Putin’s war machine, choking off his ability to continue his barbaric war in Ukraine,” Starmer stated.

As Ukraine faces intensifying attacks and rising civilian casualties, the support from G7 nations is being positioned as both a strategic necessity and a moral imperative. Zelensky’s presence at the summit serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of the war — and the global stakes at play as Western allies work to maintain pressure on the Kremlin.
