In a recent statement, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin is inclined to bring the war in Ukraine to an end. Trump suggested that Putin does not want the conflict to continue and implied that a peaceful resolution could be possible under the right leadership.
Speaking during an interview, Trump commented on the ongoing war that began in 2022 with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He reiterated his long-standing claim that, had he been in office, the war would have never started. Now, Trump asserts, Putin is looking for a way out.
“I think Putin wants to stop the war. I really believe he wants to see it end,” Trump said, without providing detailed evidence to support his claim. “It’s a terrible situation, but I think it can be resolved quickly with strong leadership.”

His latest comments have sparked reactions across the political spectrum. Some see them as wishful thinking or strategic messaging, while others argue that any push toward diplomacy should be explored if it helps end the bloodshed.
As the war enters another year with no clear end in sight, Trump’s statement adds to the ongoing global conversation about how—and when—the conflict might conclude. Whether Putin truly desires peace remains uncertain, but the world continues to watch closely for signs of a shift in the Kremlin’s stance.
