In a significant move to bolster Europe’s defence capabilities, the United Kingdom and Germany have announced plans to jointly develop a new “deep precision strike” weapon with a range of over 2,000 kilometres.

The initiative underscores the growing urgency among European powers to strengthen their own security infrastructure as geopolitical tensions rise, particularly in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine and shifting dynamics in U.S. foreign policy.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the British government ahead of a high-level meeting in Berlin between UK Defence Minister John Healey and his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius.

This new weapons development project is rooted in a defence pact signed by both nations last year, which outlined a shared commitment to advancing military technology and ensuring Europe is better equipped to respond to emerging threats.

The UK-Germany partnership reflects a broader European strategy to become more self-reliant in defence, especially as U.S. President Donald Trump, now re-elected, has reiterated expectations for Europe to assume greater responsibility for its own security. This political backdrop has catalyzed efforts across the continent to invest more heavily in domestic defence industries.

“In a more dangerous world, NATO and European allies stand united,” said Healey in a statement. “This partnership is helping us make defence an engine for growth – creating jobs, boosting skills, and driving investment across the UK and Germany.”

While specific details regarding the timeline or financial scale of the long-range missile project remain undisclosed, the announcement signals a deepening of Anglo-German defence cooperation. The ministers are also expected to discuss further collaborative efforts, including the joint procurement of torpedoes for maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft.

Additionally, Germany is set to purchase British-made military bridges, further solidifying the industrial and strategic ties between the two nations.

As Europe navigates an increasingly volatile security landscape, partnerships like this one between London and Berlin are likely to play a pivotal role in shaping the continent’s defence future.
