Novak Djokovic, the record 24-time Grand Slam champion, will not be participating in the upcoming Italian Open in Rome, scheduled from May 7 to 18, tournament organizers announced on Tuesday. The surprise withdrawal adds another twist to what has been a turbulent and trophyless start to the Serbian star’s 2025 season.
“Novak Djokovic has announced he won’t take part in #IBI25. See you next year, Nole,” read a message from the Italian Open’s official social media account. No official reason was given for the 37-year-old’s absence from one of his favorite clay court tournaments, where he has previously lifted the trophy six times — the last time in 2022.

Djokovic’s decision to skip Rome delays his pursuit of a 100th ATP title and raises questions about his form ahead of the upcoming French Open at Roland Garros, where he is also a defending champion. His last tournament win came at the Paris Olympics in 2024, marking a long gap for a player renowned for dominating the men’s tour.

So far in 2025, Djokovic has struggled to find rhythm or consistency. He suffered a narrow loss in the Miami Open final to rising Czech teenager Jakub Mensik, followed by early-round exits in the clay season. In Monte Carlo, he was knocked out in his opening match by Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo.

In Madrid, Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi stunned him on Saturday, ending Djokovic’s run before he could build any meaningful momentum.

Earlier this season, Djokovic revealed he had been dealing with the lingering effects of an eye infection — a condition that may have contributed to his underwhelming performances during the crucial lead-up to the clay-court Grand Slams.

Currently ranked world No. 5, Djokovic will now shift his focus to recovery and preparation for Roland Garros, where he will attempt to add to his record-setting Grand Slam tally.
His absence from Rome not only reshapes the tournament’s competitive landscape but also highlights a broader narrative in 2025: a tennis legend in search of form, fitness, and one more defining run on the big stage.
