After nearly two decades at the top of world football, Mats Julian Hummels has announced that this season will be his last.
The 35-year-old defender, currently playing for AS Roma, shared the emotional news on Instagram, saying he is “struggling with emotions” as he prepares to bring the curtain down on a truly remarkable career.
“Now comes the moment no footballer can avoid,” Hummels wrote. “After more than 18 years with so many things that football has given me, I’m ending my career this summer.”

Hummels’ football journey began in the Bayern Munich academy, where he developed into a technically gifted, composed centre-back. While he had two spells at Bayern — most notably from 2016 to 2019 — it’s his time at Borussia Dortmund that defines his legacy.

During two stellar stints with Dortmund, Hummels helped the club to two Bundesliga titles and played a vital role in their run to the 2013 UEFA Champions League final, where they narrowly lost to Bayern in a gripping all-German showdown.
Fast forward to May 2024, and Hummels once again led Dortmund to a Champions League final appearance — a testament to his longevity and enduring quality — though they fell short against Real Madrid, losing 2-0.

On the international stage, Hummels reached the pinnacle of the sport as part of the Germany squad that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. His performances throughout that tournament, particularly his towering header against France in the quarterfinals, are etched in football history.

Though Hummels has announced his retirement, there’s still business to be handled on the pitch. Roma, under veteran coach Claudio Ranieri, are fighting for Champions League qualification, sitting just four points off fourth place with eight matches remaining.
A huge clash against Juventus looms this Sunday, and Hummels will be crucial if Roma are to achieve their European ambitions.

With nearly 20 years of elite football, countless honours, and an unwavering dedication to his craft, Mats Hummels leaves behind a legacy that few defenders can match. His leadership, intelligence, and class on the pitch have earned him admiration from fans across the globe.
