In a political shake-up that could redefine Canada’s future, former central banker Mark Carney has won the leadership of the ruling Liberal Party, succeeding Justin Trudeau as the country’s prime minister.

Carney’s victory, with a commanding 86% of the vote over former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, marks a pivotal moment for Canada as it grapples with economic uncertainty, a looming general election, and escalating tensions with its largest trading partner, the United States.

Carney, 59, steps into power at a turbulent time. The country is embroiled in a trade standoff with the U.S., where President Donald Trump’s administration has imposed heavy tariffs on Canadian goods. In response, Trudeau’s government levied C$30 billion in retaliatory tariffs, further straining relations between the two allies.

At the Liberal Party gathering, Carney did not mince words about the challenges ahead. “There’s someone trying to weaken our economy,” he said, referring to Trump, drawing loud boos from the crowd. “He’s attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses. We can’t let him succeed.”

Carney vowed to take bold action, asserting, “This won’t be business as usual. We will have to do things we haven’t imagined before, at speeds we didn’t think possible.” His emphasis on swift, decisive action signals a departure from the Liberal Party’s recent struggles, as it seeks to regain momentum ahead of an imminent general election.

Justin Trudeau announced his decision to step down in January after more than nine years in power, a move prompted by plummeting approval ratings and growing dissatisfaction within his party.

In his farewell address, he underscored the gravity of the moment: “Make no mistake, this is a nation-defining moment. Democracy is not a given. Freedom is not a given. Even Canada is not a given.”

Under Trudeau’s leadership, the Liberals faced a steep decline, trailing the opposition Conservatives by more than 20 points at the start of 2025.

However, Carney’s leadership, coupled with Trump’s aggressive trade policies and controversial remarks about annexing Canada as the 51st U.S. state, has led to an unexpected resurgence in Liberal support. Recent polls show the party now in a statistical tie with the Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre.

Carney’s rise to power is unprecedented in Canadian politics. Unlike his predecessors, he has no prior experience as an elected official.

However, his tenure as the only individual to have served as the governor of two G7 central banks—Canada and the United Kingdom—has given him a wealth of experience in economic and financial matters. He argues that this background makes him uniquely qualified to navigate trade negotiations with Trump and protect Canada’s economic interests.

“My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect,” Carney declared, signaling a firm stance against U.S. economic aggression.

Although the next general election is scheduled for October 20, sources within the Liberal Party suggest that Carney may call for an earlier vote. While he can serve as prime minister without holding a seat in the House of Commons, tradition dictates that he should seek to win one as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the political battle is intensifying. The Liberals have launched ads likening Conservative leader Poilievre to Trump, while Poilievre has wasted no time in ramping up his attacks on Carney. With the election approaching and tensions with the U.S. at an all-time high, Canada’s political landscape is set for a dramatic showdown.

Beyond party politics, Trump’s aggressive trade measures have galvanized Canadians across the political spectrum. In Ottawa, protesters gathered outside Parliament, holding signs denouncing Trump’s policies rather than focusing on domestic political rivalries.

University of British Columbia politics professor Richard Johnston noted, “There is a rallying-around-the-flag moment that we would never have predicted a year ago. It’s probably true that the Liberals have been saved from oblivion.”

While no party currently appears poised to secure a majority government, Carney’s leadership has given the Liberals a fighting chance.
