In a significant move to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a new £1.6 billion ($2 billion) agreement that will enable Ukraine to purchase 5,000 advanced air-defense missiles.

The deal, structured through export finance, is aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s ability to protect its critical infrastructure against ongoing Russian attacks.

The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that Thales, a leading defense manufacturer, will produce the lightweight multirole missiles for Ukraine.

These advanced weapons, boasting a range of over six kilometers (3.7 miles), can be deployed from various platforms across land, sea, and air. Their versatility and effectiveness will play a crucial role in countering aerial threats and reinforcing Ukraine’s defensive lines.

Prime Minister Starmer emphasized the importance of this military aid, stating that it is essential for Ukraine’s security today and will contribute to a lasting peace in the future.

The announcement comes at a critical juncture, as Ukraine recently endured its largest drone assault since the onset of the war three years ago. Russian forces launched over 200 drones in a single night, underscoring the urgency of strengthening Ukraine’s air-defense systems.

This commitment from the UK signals continued Western support for Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression. By supplying advanced missile technology, Britain is not only helping to safeguard Ukrainian cities and infrastructure but also reinforcing the broader geopolitical stance against military invasions and territorial violations.
