Germany Calls on Israel to Lift Gaza Aid Blockade Amid Stalled Truce Talks

Germany has urged Israel to immediately allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, as negotiations over a truce extension appear to have stalled. The call comes after Israel blocked aid deliveries on Sunday, a move that has drawn international concern.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer stressed the importance of ensuring humanitarian aid reaches Gaza without obstruction.

“Unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip must be guaranteed at all times,” he stated. “Granting or denial of humanitarian access is not a legitimate means of pressure in negotiations.”

Germany, a long-time ally of Israel, also pressed Hamas to release the hostages it still holds. “Hamas must now put an end to the suffering and humiliation of the remaining hostages and their families,” Fischer added.

The ongoing conflict stems from Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which triggered the war in Gaza. Over the weekend, Israel announced an extension of the truce until mid-April, citing a proposal from U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

However, Hamas has rejected the extension, instead advocating for a transition to the truce deal’s second phase, which could lead to a permanent cessation of hostilities.

With tensions mounting, Germany is urging both Israel and Hamas to return to the negotiating table. “Both sides must ensure the continuation of the ceasefire agreement,” Fischer emphasized.

“This is essential for the release of further hostages, for improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and, in the long term, for the reconstruction of Gaza and a peaceful future in the region.”
