Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel and his wife, supermodel and entrepreneur Miranda Kerr, have supported one of the largest medical debt relief initiatives in California by helping eliminate more than $550 million in unpaid medical bills for over 261,000 residents.
The debt relief effort was carried out through the nonprofit organization Undue Medical Debt, formerly known as RIP Medical Debt. The charity specializes in purchasing qualifying medical debt from hospitals and debt collectors at heavily discounted prices before permanently canceling it, giving struggling families a fresh financial start.
The initiative is expected to provide significant relief to low-income households and individuals burdened by healthcare expenses. Beneficiaries do not need to submit applications or repay any of the cancelled debt. Instead, eligible recipients are identified using financial criteria established by the nonprofit and are notified directly once their medical debt has been erased.
Undue Medical Debt operates on a unique model that allows donations to have an outsized impact. Since unpaid medical debt is often sold on the secondary market for only a small fraction of its original value, every dollar donated can eliminate approximately $100 worth of qualifying medical debt, although the exact figure varies depending on the debt portfolio acquired.
To qualify for assistance, households generally must earn no more than four times the federal poverty level or have medical debt equal to at least five percent of their annual household income. Once the debt is cancelled, recipients are informed without any action required on their part.
Another key benefit of the program is that the forgiven medical debt does not create a tax liability for recipients, allowing families to receive financial relief without facing additional tax obligations.
The contribution by Spiegel and Kerr underscores the growing role of private philanthropy in addressing the medical debt crisis in the United States, where millions of Americans continue to struggle with healthcare-related financial burdens.
