Nigerian Exchange Limited Extends Trading Hours to 4 p.m. to Boost Market Activity

Nigeria’s capital market is set for a significant upgrade as the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) announces an extension of its daily trading hours, a move aimed at increasing liquidity and attracting more investor participation.

In a statement released on April 17, 2026, the exchange confirmed that the new trading schedule will take effect from Monday, April 27, 2026. Under the revised structure, the market will now open earlier at 9:00 a.m., instead of 9:30 a.m., and close later at 4:00 p.m., effectively lengthening the trading window.

The decision, approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission, is part of broader efforts to modernize Nigeria’s financial markets and align them with global standards. By extending trading hours, NGX aims to give investors more time to respond to market developments, execute trades, and make informed decisions.

Market analysts believe the adjustment could significantly improve liquidity, as longer trading periods typically encourage higher transaction volumes and better price discovery. For both retail and institutional investors, the added flexibility means more opportunities to engage with the market throughout the day.

The timing of this reform is also notable, coming shortly after Nigeria’s reclassification to Frontier Market status by FTSE Russell. This development has already increased global attention on the country’s capital market, and the extended trading hours are expected to further strengthen its appeal to foreign investors seeking emerging market opportunities.

According to NGX, the change follows extensive consultations with key stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition. The exchange emphasized that the initiative is designed not only to deepen liquidity but also to broaden access and improve overall market efficiency.

Ultimately, the extended trading window represents a strategic step toward building a more dynamic and competitive capital market in Nigeria—one that can better support capital formation while boosting confidence among investors at home and abroad.
