The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.
The announcement was made in an official statement signed by Magdalene Ajani, confirming that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the holidays on behalf of the federal government.
Eid-el-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection observed by Muslims around the world. As part of the announcement, the minister extended warm congratulations to Muslim faithful across Nigeria for successfully completing the month-long spiritual exercise.
He encouraged believers to carry forward the values emphasized during Ramadan, including love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice. According to the statement, these virtues remain essential not only within religious communities but also for strengthening unity across the country.
The minister also called on Nigerians of all backgrounds to use the festive period as an opportunity to pray for the nation’s peace, stability, and continued progress. He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in building a more harmonious and prosperous society.
While wishing Muslims a joyful celebration, the government urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and remember those in need by extending acts of kindness and charity during the holiday.
The declaration of the public holidays reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to promoting religious harmony, national unity, and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse population.
