U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized the situation facing Christians in Nigeria, declaring that the faith community there is under an “existential threat” and warning that the United States will not stand idly by.
In a social media statement, Trump said, “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” and added, “The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!
As part of his response, Trump announced that he was placing Nigeria on a watch list under U.S. religious-freedom rules — a move that could open the door to sanctions or the suspension of non-humanitarian aid if adopted — and directed U.S. officials to prepare policy options.
The announcement followed growing pressure from U.S. lawmakers and activists who say the Nigerian government has not done enough to stop deadly attacks on churches and Christian communities.
The statement has provoked a swift diplomatic pushback from Nigeria, which rejected the characterization of the nation as religiously intolerant and emphasized that violence has affected people of all faiths in conflict-affected regions. Nigerian officials stressed their commitment to protecting citizens and urged careful evaluation of the facts before punitive actions are taken.
