Italy Deploys 500 Army Troops in Milan After Protests and Looting

Italy is preparing to deploy 500 additional army troops to Milan following violent protests that escalated into clashes with police, vandalism and looting. The move comes as the government considers tougher security measures to prevent further unrest.

Italy is set to deploy 500 additional army troops to Milan after days of unrest disrupted parts of the city and raised concerns about public safety.

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini announced the planned deployment on Monday, October 19, saying the additional soldiers would help “defend Milan” following a weekend of violence in Italy’s financial and fashion capital. The deployment is expected to form part of a wider security package being considered by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government.

The unrest followed demonstrations linked to concerns about the rising cost of living and poor public services. Although the protests initially began peacefully, some groups later clashed with police, damaged property and looted shops across parts of the city.

Authorities reported that young people, including minors, were involved in the disturbances. Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse violent groups as tensions escalated.

The violence also affected businesses in central Milan, with several shops closing early or boarding up their windows amid fears of further attacks. Some luxury retailers removed merchandise from their displays as a precaution against potential looting.

Beyond the planned military deployment, the Italian government is preparing additional measures aimed at preventing further violence and strengthening public security.

Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani said the government intended to respond firmly to the unrest while protecting businesses and ensuring that people could move freely through city centres.

According to Italy’s ANSA news agency, the proposed measures include giving the additional troops police powers in Milan. The government is also considering tougher measures targeting offences involving minors. The authorities face the challenge of maintaining public order while ensuring that peaceful demonstrations remain protected.

Concerns about further unrest remain as additional demonstrations are anticipated. Businesses and residents are watching closely to see whether the increased security presence will prevent another round of violence.

The situation also highlights the tension between public frustration over living costs and the government’s efforts to maintain order. While peaceful protests provide an avenue for people to express their concerns, violence and looting have added pressure on authorities to respond.
