Elon Musk Pledges to Give Every American Child a SpaceX Share in 2027

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced plans to give every child in the United States one share of SpaceX next year, unveiling a potentially multibillion-dollar giveaway that could put company ownership into the hands of millions of young Americans.

Musk made the announcement on October 19, 2026, through a post on his social media platform, X. “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” Musk wrote, adding that the initiative would be the “first of many.”

If carried out as described, the pledge could reach approximately 72 million to 73 million children under the age of 18. Based on recently reported SpaceX share prices of around $146 to $150, the total value of the proposed distribution could exceed $10 billion. However, Musk has not yet provided a detailed plan explaining how the giveaway will work.

The value of each gift would depend on SpaceX’s share price when the shares are distributed. Based on a price of approximately $146 per share, each child’s initial holding would be worth about $146.

While that may seem modest compared with the wealth of a billionaire, the potential scale of the programme is significant. With tens of millions of eligible children, the total value of the proposed gifts could reach roughly $10.5 billion or more, depending on the number of recipients and the share price used for the calculation.

The shares would give recipients an ownership interest in SpaceX. Their value could rise or fall as the company’s business and share price change, meaning the gift would not represent a guaranteed cash payment.

One of the biggest unanswered questions is how Musk intends to transfer the shares to millions of children. He has not publicly detailed the eligibility requirements, registration process, distribution schedule or arrangements for holding shares on behalf of minors.

One possibility is the use of Trump Accounts, a US government-backed investment account initiative designed for children. Such accounts can accept eligible financial contributions, including certain stock donations.

However, Musk has not confirmed that he will use this system for his proposed giveaway. The precise mechanism for distributing the shares remains unclear. Until further details are announced, parents should be cautious about websites or social media posts claiming to offer official registration for the giveaway.

The announcement followed a discussion about how technology companies should distribute wealth and contribute to society. The artificial intelligence company Anthropic had announced plans to dedicate 5% of its shares to a public-benefit fund. Musk responded by arguing that shares should be given directly to members of the public.

His subsequent announcement outlined a plan to distribute SpaceX shares directly to American children, presenting it as the beginning of further giveaways.

Musk has also argued that advances in artificial intelligence and robotics could transform the economy and reduce the role traditional employment plays in people’s lives. He has advocated for a future in which technological abundance could support higher incomes across society.

The proposed share distribution fits into that wider discussion about how the wealth generated by major technology companies might reach ordinary people.

If the initiative proceeds, millions of children could gain an early introduction to investing and company ownership.

Holding a share could also give them a financial interest in SpaceX’s future performance. However, the practical benefits would depend on the terms of the transfer, any restrictions on selling the shares and how accounts for minors are managed.

The announcement also raises questions about the administration of such a large distribution, including how recipients would be identified and how ownership would be recorded. Although the proposed giveaway has attracted considerable attention, the financial estimate remains based on current share prices and the assumption that the pledge will cover every eligible child as described.

Musk’s announcement represents an ambitious promise that could transfer billions of dollars’ worth of SpaceX stock to young Americans if it is fulfilled.

For now, however, the announcement is a pledge rather than a completed transaction. The billionaire has not announced a definitive timetable, eligibility rules or confirmed distribution mechanism. The coming months should reveal whether the initiative takes shape, how the shares will reach children and what safeguards will govern their ownership.

For families watching the development, the central question is no longer simply how much a SpaceX share is worth today, but whether Musk’s proposed giveaway will become a functioning programme in 2027.
