Nigeria has made history at the Veterans World Wrestling Championships after former national champion Mapsin Elias Mika secured a bronze medal in the 70kg Greco-Roman category in Amman, Jordan.
The achievement marks Nigeria’s reported first-ever medal at the competition, giving the country a significant milestone in its wrestling history and bringing international recognition to its veteran athletes.
Mika, a former national wrestling champion, earned the bronze medal in the 70kg category, competing in the Greco-Roman style, which focuses on upper-body techniques, throws and control. Unlike freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman rules prohibit holds below the waist.
His performance represents a notable achievement for Nigerian wrestling, particularly at a championship dedicated to veteran competitors who continue to participate in the sport beyond their younger competitive years.
Nigeria has a long-standing presence in international wrestling, but this reported first medal at the Veterans World Wrestling Championships gives the country another achievement to celebrate.
Mika’s result also highlights the continued commitment of experienced athletes who remain active in competitive sport and represent their country on the international stage.
Veterans competitions provide athletes with opportunities to test their skills against international opponents, maintain their competitive spirit and inspire younger generations of wrestlers.
The bronze medal in Amman adds to Nigeria’s sporting achievements and places attention on the potential of veteran athletes to contribute to the country’s presence in international competitions.
Mika’s performance is a reminder that sporting excellence can continue long after an athlete’s early career, with experience, discipline and dedication remaining valuable assets on the mat.
His historic result will be welcomed by Nigerian wrestling supporters as the country celebrates what is being reported as its first medal at the Veterans World Wrestling Championships.
