French Mayor Tear-Gassed While Protecting Students During School Funding Protest

A mayor in France was reportedly tear-gassed by police while standing alongside students during a protest over school funding. Bally Bagayoko, the mayor of Saint-Denis, was among those taking part in demonstrations calling for better funding and improved conditions for schools. During the protest, tensions reportedly escalated between demonstrators and police, with Bagayoko caught in the use of tear gas.

According to reports, the mayor had been standing with students and other protesters as they called for greater government support for education.

Bagayoko’s presence at the demonstration drew attention because he was not simply attending as a local official. He was reportedly positioned alongside students as tensions developed, with the mayor seeking to keep them safe during the confrontation.

The incident has since sparked discussion about the policing of demonstrations involving young people and the concerns surrounding school funding in the area.

The demonstration was centered on demands for more resources for schools, as students, educators and supporters called for improved funding and better educational conditions. Bagayoko has previously been outspoken on issues affecting schools and public services in Saint-Denis, a city north of Paris.

The reported use of tear gas against the mayor has added another dimension to the protest, drawing attention beyond the original dispute over education funding.

The incident also highlights the tensions that can emerge when public officials join demonstrations alongside students and other members of their communities.
