Maldives’ 1,000 Rufiyaa Note Gains Global Fame for Its Stunning Design

The Maldives’ 1,000 rufiyaa banknote has gained international attention for its striking design, with the note frequently described as one of the world’s most beautiful banknotes.

Introduced as part of the Maldives’ redesigned banknote series, the 1,000 rufiyaa note celebrates the country’s marine environment. Its design features underwater imagery including a whale shark, manta rays, a green sea turtle and coral reefs, reflecting the importance of the ocean to the island nation.

The polymer banknote was also recognized internationally in 2016 when it was nominated for the International Bank Note Society’s Bank Note of the Year award. It ultimately finished as a runner-up, while Switzerland’s 50-franc note won the award.

The note’s design has continued to attract attention beyond the world of currency collecting. In 2017, the 1,000 rufiyaa was included in a Daily Telegraph list of 21 of the world’s most beautiful currencies, with its underwater imagery cited as one of its defining features.

More recently, the note has repeatedly gone viral on social media, where users have praised its vibrant blue colour and depictions of marine life. Some posts have referred to it as the “prettiest currency in the world,” although such descriptions are subjective rather than an official global ranking.

The 1,000 rufiyaa note was designed to showcase the natural beauty surrounding the Maldives, making its artwork closely connected to the country’s identity as an island nation surrounded by tropical waters and coral reefs.

While there is no official worldwide title for the “most beautiful banknote,” the Maldivian 1,000 rufiyaa has earned a notable place among internationally admired banknote designs.
