Bill Gates Warns AI Could Cause a Billion Deaths if Misused

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence has become powerful enough to potentially drive events resulting in a billion deaths if the technology falls into the wrong hands. Gates made the comments in an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, as governments and technology companies continue to debate how advanced artificial intelligence should be regulated and monitored.

Asked whether AI could become powerful enough to end humanity, Gates said the technology was “certainly powerful enough” to drive events that could cause a billion deaths. He added that the combination of advanced AI tools and people with malicious intentions could represent an unprecedented threat.

Gates’ warning does not mean he is predicting that one billion people will die from AI. Rather, he was describing the potential scale of harm that could result if increasingly capable AI systems were deliberately misused.

The technology billionaire pointed to areas such as cyberattacks and biotechnology as examples of capabilities that could become more dangerous as AI advances. He argued that AI could make it easier for malicious actors to carry out activities that previously required significant expertise and resources.

Gates also rejected the idea that AI companies should be left to regulate themselves. He said “no one thinks self-regulation is enough” and called for lawmakers and law-enforcement agencies to be involved in establishing safeguards and monitoring systems for advanced AI.

His comments come amid growing debate over the risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems. Other technology leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have also called for stronger safety standards and government involvement in managing the technology’s potential risks.

At the same time, the debate over AI regulation remains contested. Some policymakers have argued that excessive regulation could slow technological development and weaken competitiveness, while others say safeguards are necessary to prevent potentially catastrophic misuse.

For Gates, the central issue is ensuring that AI’s rapid development is accompanied by systems capable of preventing its most dangerous applications.

As artificial intelligence continues to advance, governments, technology companies and researchers are increasingly being forced to confront the same question: how can society capture the benefits of increasingly powerful AI while limiting the consequences if the technology is deliberately or accidentally misused?
