Uganda’s King Oyo Dies at 34 After Nearly 31 Years on the Throne

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom has died at the age of 34, bringing an end to a remarkable reign that began when he was just three years old.

The Tooro Kingdom announced his death on Friday, August 28, 2026. King Oyo reportedly died on Thursday night while receiving medical treatment in the United States. The cause of death has not been officially disclosed.

Born on April 16, 1992, Oyo inherited the throne on September 12, 1995, following the sudden death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.

He was only three years old at the time, making him the world’s youngest reigning monarch. His unusual rise to the throne attracted international attention, with Guinness World Records recognizing him for the record.

Because of his age, Oyo initially ruled under the guidance of regents. He formally took on the responsibilities of the monarchy when he turned 18 in 2010.

King Oyo spent almost his entire life as the traditional ruler of Tooro, one of Uganda’s historic kingdoms. Although Uganda is a republic and its traditional monarchs do not hold political power, the Tooro king has an important cultural and social role among the Batooro people.

During his reign, Oyo became known for supporting causes involving youth empowerment, education, environmental conservation and public health. He was also widely recognized for helping connect Uganda’s traditional heritage with a younger generation.

The announcement of Oyo’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief across Uganda, with political leaders and members of the public paying tribute to the young monarch.

Tooro Kingdom officials have also assured the public that the royal succession will continue. Reports indicate that Oyo leaves behind a son who is expected to be part of the succession process, although details about the heir have yet to be formally announced.

King Oyo’s death marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Uganda’s royal history. From becoming a king at three to spending nearly 31 years on the throne, Oyo Nyimba lived a life that few people could ever imagine—and became a symbol of the Tooro Kingdom to millions around the world.
