Fifteen members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have reportedly been abducted by gunmen while travelling to Abuja after completing their orientation programme in Bayelsa State.
The corps members, who were part of the 2026 Batch B Stream II, had just left the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State when the incident occurred on Wednesday, August 26.
The corps members were travelling through the Ofu/Itobe–Onicha-Igo axis of Ofu Local Government Area, Kogi State, when armed men reportedly stopped the vehicles and abducted passengers.
The victims were travelling in a Peace Mass Transit bus and another vehicle marked 564. A police officer who contacted some of the families reportedly obtained their details from a passenger manifest recovered after the attack.
The driver of the Peace Mass Transit bus reportedly sustained serious injuries during the attack and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said security operatives immediately began a search operation in the area.
Importantly, the police later announced that 11 abducted victims had been rescued, including the drivers of the two buses. The command said most of those rescued were NYSC members travelling from Bayelsa to Abuja.
The exact number of corps members still in captivity remains unclear based on the latest police update.
The incident has caused anxiety among the families of the affected corps members, with relatives appealing for urgent action to secure the safety and release of those still missing.
The attack has also renewed concerns about the safety of corps members travelling long distances after completing their mandatory orientation programmes.
As security agencies continue the search, families are hoping for the safe return of every corps member affected by the attack.
