Mark Zuckerberg Buys 19th-Century Gothic Castle in Ireland Worth Up to $35 Million

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have purchased Strancally Castle, a historic Gothic Revival estate in County Waterford, Ireland, reportedly worth between $23 million and $35 million.

The off-market purchase was completed several weeks ago, although the exact amount paid has not been publicly disclosed. The Irish Times estimates the property’s value at between €20 million and €30 million.

Built around 1830, Strancally Castle sits on a sprawling 440-acre estate along the River Blackwater. The three-storey property covers roughly 16,000 square feet and underwent extensive renovations in the early 2000s.

The estate was previously owned by financier Michael Alen-Buckley and his wife, Giancarla, who reportedly spent about two decades restoring the historic property.

A spokesperson for Zuckerberg said the family is excited to take care of the historic home and spend more time in Ireland. The couple will continue to live primarily in the United States, with the castle expected to serve as a base during their visits to the country.

The purchase also has a connection to Zuckerberg’s business interests. Meta maintains its international headquarters in Ireland, where it employs around 1,500 people. Ireland has long been an important European base for major US technology companies.

Strancally Castle was designed by architects James and George Richard Pain for John Keily, a former member of Parliament. The property has remained in private hands throughout its history and is known for its imposing Gothic architecture and extensive grounds.

The acquisition adds another high-value property to Zuckerberg and Chan’s growing real estate portfolio, which includes properties in California, Hawaii, Florida and Washington, D.C.

While the reported $35 million figure is an estimate rather than a confirmed purchase price, the deal gives the billionaire couple a remarkable historic residence in one of Ireland’s most scenic regions.

For Zuckerberg, the purchase appears to be less about relocating permanently and more about having a private base for his family while spending time in Ireland, where his company has maintained a major presence for years.
