Bilibili, China’s YouTube Rival, Launches Globally on Android

China’s popular video-sharing platform Bilibili has officially expanded its international reach, launching a new global version of its app for Android users.

The platform announced that its international app is now available globally, with an iOS version expected to follow soon. Bilibili says the international version will feature more localized content and a simpler sign-up process designed for users outside China.

Often described as “China’s YouTube,” Bilibili has built a large community around anime, gaming, technology, entertainment and other user-generated video content. One of its best-known features is its “danmu” or bullet-comment system, which allows viewers to post comments that appear directly across videos as they play.

The global launch marks another major attempt by Bilibili to expand beyond its home market. The company has already been increasing its international presence, including efforts to attract creators and audiences in markets such as the United States, Japan and Europe.

One notable change in the international version is the simplified registration process. Reports indicate that users can sign up without the identity-verification requirement associated with Bilibili’s domestic service, potentially making the platform easier for international audiences to access.

The company is also positioning the platform around globally distributed content and improved localization, suggesting that the international service will continue to evolve as Bilibili learns more about audiences outside China.

The move puts Bilibili in a competitive global video market dominated by platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. Its strongest advantage could be its established community around anime, gaming and Asian entertainment, particularly as demand for Chinese animation, gaming content and other Asian pop culture continues to grow internationally.

For now, Android users can access the new international version, while iPhone users will have to wait for the iOS release. Bilibili has also indicated that additional countries and localization improvements are expected as its global expansion continues.
