Marvel Studios Plans to Cut Back on Live-Action Disney+ Shows

Marvel Studios is reportedly preparing to reduce the number of new live-action series it produces for Disney+, marking a significant shift from the studio’s earlier strategy of expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe through frequent streaming releases.

According to a new report from Collider, the change is expected to take effect after “VisionQuest,” the upcoming Disney+ series starring Paul Bettany. The project could become the last major new live-action Marvel series produced for the platform under the studio’s current approach.

The reported reduction, however, does not mean Marvel is abandoning live-action television altogether. Existing and returning projects are expected to continue, including “Daredevil: Born Again,” which has already established itself as one of Marvel’s ongoing Disney+ properties.

Potential limited series developed under the “Marvel Presents” and “Marvel Spotlight” banners could also still move forward. The reported strategy appears to focus more on producing fewer television projects rather than completely ending Marvel’s presence on Disney+.

The shift follows several years in which Marvel dramatically increased its television output. Shows such as WandaVision, Loki, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and Secret Invasion helped expand the MCU beyond cinemas and gave Disney+ a steady pipeline of Marvel content.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had previously indicated that the company intended to reduce its television output and place greater emphasis on quality and selectivity. The strategy reflects an effort to make Marvel’s streaming projects feel more distinctive rather than treating Disney+ as a platform that requires a constant stream of new MCU shows.

The cancellation of Wonder Man’s second season has also added to the signs of a broader change in Marvel’s television strategy, while VisionQuest remains a major upcoming project for the studio.

For fans, the development could mean longer gaps between new Marvel live-action series, but potentially more focused productions when they do arrive.

With “Daredevil: Born Again” continuing and limited projects still potentially in development, Marvel’s Disney+ future appears to be moving toward a smaller but more selective slate of live-action shows rather than the high-volume approach that defined much of the MCU’s early streaming era.
