Mark Zuckerberg’s $300 million superyacht, Launchpad, has come under public scrutiny following claims that its crew failed to respond to a stranded boat in Alaska. The incident reportedly began when a small skiff ran out of fuel while in Alaskan waters. According to the captain of a nearby cruise ship, attempts were made to contact Launchpad by radio for assistance, but the yacht allegedly did not respond.
The account quickly attracted attention because of the yacht’s enormous value and its association with Zuckerberg, the Meta founder. Questions were raised online over why a vessel of its size and resources did not assist the smaller boat. However, representatives for Zuckerberg have disputed the suggestion that the yacht deliberately ignored the stranded vessel.
According to his spokesperson, Zuckerberg was not aboard Launchpad at the time of the incident. The yacht’s crew was also monitoring a different radio channel, meaning they did not hear the calls for assistance.
The U.S. Coast Guard also reportedly confirmed that the stranded boat was never in a situation that placed its occupants in immediate danger.
The clarification has added another dimension to the controversy, as the original account suggested that Launchpad had knowingly failed to respond to a distress situation. Zuckerberg’s representatives maintain that this was not the case and that the incident was instead the result of a communication mismatch.
Launchpad, which is valued at around $300 million, is one of the high-profile luxury assets associated with the billionaire. The vessel has attracted considerable attention since its launch, both because of its size and its connection to one of the world’s wealthiest technology entrepreneurs.
While the incident has sparked criticism online, the available explanation from Zuckerberg’s representatives suggests there was no deliberate decision by the yacht’s crew to leave people in distress without assistance.
