Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has offered a rare glimpse into the demands of leading one of the world’s largest economies, revealing that getting just zero to three hours of sleep each night has become her normal routine since assuming office.
In a candid post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Takaichi described the intense workload that has consumed her days and nights, saying a full night’s sleep has become an exception rather than the rule. According to the prime minister, a recent five-hour rest during Japan’s Marine Day public holiday felt like a luxury after weeks of relentless work.
Takaichi explained that her schedule has been dominated by government responsibilities, including reviewing key policy documents on Japan’s economic growth strategy, regional development plans and preparations for the country’s next fiscal budget. She also spent weekends preparing for parliamentary questioning in the National Diet while working through thousands of pending emails that often kept her awake until dawn.
Despite her demanding official duties, the prime minister revealed that household responsibilities still awaited her after returning home. She said she used the public holiday to catch up on a backlog of chores, including ironing clothes, washing laundry, cleaning the bathroom, preparing dinner, washing dishes and carrying out sewing repairs on worn clothing.
In her post, Takaichi shared that she spent part of the afternoon ironing handkerchiefs and undergarments from several untouched loads of laundry while repairing frayed skirt hems and reinforcing loose buttons on jackets. She admitted the situation had become so pressing that she was beginning to run short of suitable underlayers to wear with her work suits.
The unusually personal disclosure has attracted widespread attention, as world leaders rarely speak publicly about the everyday challenges of balancing national leadership with domestic responsibilities.
Takaichi’s comments highlight the intense pressures associated with Japan’s highest political office and offer a human perspective on the sacrifices often required of national leaders behind the scenes. Her remarks have also sparked conversations about work-life balance, leadership demands and the importance of rest, even for those entrusted with leading a nation.
