Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is on the verge of becoming the new captain of Turkish champions Galatasaray following the departure of Argentine forward Mauro Icardi, who has officially left the club after the expiration of his contract.
With Icardi’s successful four-year spell in Istanbul coming to an end, Osimhen has emerged as the leading candidate to inherit the captain’s armband after serving as vice-captain during another title-winning campaign for the Turkish giants. While Galatasaray is yet to make an official announcement, reports from Turkey suggest the Nigerian international is widely expected to take over the leadership role.
Icardi leaves Galatasaray as one of the club’s most successful captains in recent history, having guided the team to four Turkish Super Lig titles and playing a key role in one of the most dominant periods in the club’s history. His departure now opens a new chapter, with Osimhen poised to lead the Yellow and Reds into the future.
Since arriving from Italian side Napoli in 2025, Osimhen has quickly established himself as one of Galatasaray’s most influential players. His impact has extended far beyond goals, with the Nigerian striker playing a central role in the club’s domestic dominance and growing success on the European stage.
Osimhen has helped Galatasaray secure back-to-back Turkish Super Lig titles, lift the Turkish Cup and compete strongly in the UEFA Champions League. Along the way, he has broken several club records, including becoming the fastest player in Galatasaray’s history to score 50 goals. He also became the first foreign player in the club’s history to score a Champions League hat-trick, achieving the remarkable feat against Ajax.
Last season further highlighted Osimhen’s leadership qualities. Despite battling injury, he returned to score in the crucial Istanbul derby victory over Fenerbahçe before netting twice against Antalyaspor as Galatasaray wrapped up a record-extending 26th Turkish Super Lig title. His consistent performances throughout the campaign saw him finish among the club’s top scorers across all competitions while regularly delivering in high-pressure matches.
Having already served as assistant captain, Osimhen has earned the trust of both the coaching staff and supporters through his commitment, professionalism and influence on and off the pitch. These qualities have made him the overwhelming favourite to replace Icardi as the club’s new captain.
If the appointment is officially confirmed, it will represent another significant achievement in Osimhen’s career. The Nigerian striker would become one of the few Nigerian footballers to captain one of Europe’s most successful clubs, further strengthening his reputation as one of Africa’s finest players and one of Galatasaray’s most important figures.
For Galatasaray, handing the captain’s armband to Osimhen would signal confidence in a player who has consistently delivered when it matters most and who is expected to lead the club as it continues to chase domestic trophies and greater success in European competitions.
