Lagos NURTW Organising Secretary Toba Ajiboye Reportedly Dies

The Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, has reportedly died after sustaining gunshot injuries in an attack by unidentified gunmen in Lagos State.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday night as Ajiboye was returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi. The attackers allegedly intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor before opening fire, leaving the car riddled with bullets.

Images and videos that surfaced on social media shortly after the attack showed Ajiboye’s white vehicle with multiple bullet holes across the windscreen and other parts of the car, highlighting the intensity of the shooting.

Initial reports indicated that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle survived the attack after suffering gunshot wounds and were rushed for medical attention. However, subsequent reports confirmed that the NURTW official later succumbed to his injuries.

The tragic development has sparked grief among members of the transport union and associates who described Ajiboye as a committed leader and influential figure within the Lagos State chapter of the NURTW.

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of the NURTW Lagos State Council, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, paid an emotional tribute to the late union leader, describing him as a loyal friend, dependable ally, and dedicated servant of the union.

In a message shared on his Facebook page, Sego expressed deep sorrow over Ajiboye’s passing, saying he was heartbroken by the sudden loss. He noted that the deceased played a significant role within the union and remained one of the pillars of TeamSego and SegoNation through his unwavering loyalty and commitment.

According to Sego, Ajiboye’s dedication to the union, steadfast support, and years of service would always be remembered by those who worked closely with him. He also described the late Organising Secretary as someone whose friendship and commitment left a lasting impact on the organization.

The Lagos NURTW chairman extended his condolences to Ajiboye’s family, friends, and members of the transport union, praying for strength and comfort for everyone affected by the loss. He also prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul, describing his death as a painful and irreparable loss.

Ajiboye’s death has added to concerns over violent attacks in parts of Lagos, with many calling for a thorough investigation to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

As of the time of this report, security authorities have not released an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the attack or announced any arrests in connection with the incident.

The late Toba Ajiboye is remembered by colleagues and supporters as a respected union leader whose contributions to the National Union of Road Transport Workers and commitment to the welfare of its members earned him admiration across the organization. His passing leaves a significant void within the Lagos State NURTW leadership.
