Zamfara State has taken a significant step toward becoming a major player in Nigeria’s mining industry with the inauguration of a $200 million lithium mining and processing plant in Boko Village, Zurmi Local Government Area.
The facility, officially commissioned by Governor Dauda Lawal, is expected to accelerate industrial development, create employment opportunities, and position the state as a key contributor to Nigeria’s growing solid minerals sector.
The Zamfara Lithium Mining and Processing Plant is a joint investment involving ZAM Mining Company Ltd, Bima Mines Ltd, Jinlide Mining Co. Ltd, and other strategic partners. The project represents one of the largest recent investments in the state’s mining industry and reflects increasing confidence in Zamfara’s vast mineral resources.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Governor Lawal described the project as a landmark achievement in his administration’s efforts to transform Zamfara into a destination for responsible investment and sustainable economic growth. He emphasized that the state’s abundant natural resources should be harnessed to improve the lives of its people through value addition, job creation, and industrial development rather than remaining largely untapped.
According to the governor, his administration has introduced reforms aimed at transitioning the mining sector from largely informal activities to a well-regulated industry capable of attracting credible investors while ensuring transparency and accountability in resource management.
Lawal noted that Zamfara has long been recognized for its rich mineral deposits, but stressed that true economic progress depends on how those resources are managed and utilized for the benefit of local communities.
He also highlighted the growing global demand for lithium, driven by the rapid expansion of renewable energy technologies, electric vehicle production, and advanced battery manufacturing. As countries around the world shift toward cleaner energy solutions, lithium has become one of the world’s most valuable strategic minerals.
The governor said Nigeria must move beyond exporting raw minerals and instead focus on local processing and value addition to maximize economic benefits. He explained that establishing processing facilities within the country would encourage industrial growth, promote technology transfer, strengthen local expertise, and generate higher economic returns.
Lawal further disclosed that the Zamfara State Government is working closely with the Federal Government to strengthen lawful mining activities, eliminate illegal operations, and ensure the solid minerals sector contributes meaningfully to national economic development.
To encourage further investment, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment through improved security, better infrastructure, and policies that support sustainable mining operations.
He also urged the operators of the new lithium processing plant to prioritize the welfare of host communities by creating employment opportunities for local residents, investing in skills development, protecting the environment, and fulfilling their corporate social responsibility obligations.
According to Lawal, the people of Boko Village and surrounding communities should experience tangible benefits from the project through improved livelihoods and long-term economic opportunities.
The commissioning of the $200 million facility marks another important milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its economy beyond oil. With global demand for lithium expected to continue rising, the Zamfara Lithium Mining and Processing Plant has the potential to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the international critical minerals market while supporting industrialization, job creation, and sustainable economic growth.
