Sweden Approves Ban on Cousin Marriages to Combat Forced Unions and Honor-Related Abuse

Sweden has officially approved a new law banning marriages between cousins and several other close relatives as part of a broader effort to address honor-related oppression, forced unions, and domestic abuse linked to family pressure.

The decision was unanimously passed by the Swedish parliament, marking a significant shift in the country’s marriage laws and social protection policies. Under the new legislation, cousin marriages will no longer be legally permitted in Sweden, while marriages involving cousins conducted abroad will also generally not be recognized by Swedish authorities.
