Meta Cuts 8,000 Jobs as Company Restructures Around Artificial Intelligence

Meta Platforms has officially begun a major round of layoffs affecting approximately 8,000 employees, representing nearly 10 percent of its global workforce, as the tech giant accelerates its push toward artificial intelligence-focused operations.

The job cuts, which started on Wednesday, are reportedly being carried out in multiple phases, with affected employees notified in waves beginning early in the morning based on local time zones.

According to reports, teams impacted so far include employees working in Meta’s integrity division, which is responsible for monitoring harmful content, misinformation, and hate speech across platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.

Staff members in cybersecurity and content design departments have also reportedly been affected as the company reshapes its workforce priorities.

Meta confirmed that employees in the United States who lose their jobs will receive severance packages that include 16 weeks of base pay, along with an additional two weeks of compensation for every year worked at the company.

The layoffs come as Meta simultaneously scales back its hiring plans. The company has reportedly canceled recruitment for around 6,000 positions while reassigning approximately 7,000 employees into roles connected to artificial intelligence workflows and AI-related projects.

The restructuring highlights how aggressively the tech industry is shifting resources toward AI development amid growing competition among major technology firms.

However, the changes have also reportedly intensified concerns among employees about job security and workplace morale within the company led by Mark Zuckerberg.

Recent reports suggest dissatisfaction has been growing internally following the introduction of AI-focused employee tracking initiatives designed to help Meta train its own artificial intelligence models.

According to the Wall Street Journal, more than 1,500 employees reportedly signed a petition objecting to the collection and use of worker data in AI training processes.

Some employees have also expressed fears that the same AI systems they are helping develop could eventually replace parts of the workforce.

One unnamed policy employee reportedly told Wired that morale within the company has declined significantly, with workers feeling increasingly uncertain about their future roles amid Meta’s rapid transition toward AI-centered operations.

Additional frustrations have reportedly emerged over reduced spending on employee benefits and compensation. Reports indicate annual raises have been scaled back, while median total compensation for workers has dropped substantially compared to previous years.

The latest layoffs mark another major restructuring effort for Meta as the company continues investing heavily in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and automation technologies while attempting to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

As AI becomes central to the future strategies of companies like Meta, concerns about workforce displacement, employee trust, and the ethical use of workplace data are becoming increasingly prominent across the global technology industry.
