Putin Says Western Global Influence Is Declining as Global South Gains Momentum

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Western nations are gradually losing their dominance in global affairs, as emerging economies in the Global South continue to gain influence within what he described as a rapidly evolving multipolar world order.

Speaking via video address at the Open Dialogue international forum, Putin said traditional global business practices and long-established international systems are beginning to slow down, partly due to what he described as the declining leadership position of Western countries.

According to the Russian leader, global power is shifting toward new economic and political centers, particularly across the Global South, where countries are increasingly asserting their independence and choosing development paths based on national priorities and sovereignty.

Putin argued that the world is moving away from a unipolar structure dominated by a few Western powers and toward a more complex international framework shaped by multiple centers of influence. He said nations that prioritize sovereignty and independent decision-making are becoming central players in this new era of global development.

The Russian president also stressed that no country can sustainably grow at the expense of others or by undermining the interests of neighboring nations. Instead, he called for stronger global cooperation in addressing modern challenges, including economic instability, security concerns, climate issues, and geopolitical tensions.

He emphasized that a fair and lasting model for global development can only be built on equality, mutual respect, and consideration for the interests of all nations, regardless of size or economic strength.

Putin further noted that international systems should be structured in a way that gives every country the opportunity to pursue growth, development, and prosperity on its own terms.

His comments come at a time of growing debate over the future of the global economic and political order, as countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America seek greater influence in global decision-making institutions historically dominated by Western powers.

The remarks also reflect Russia’s continued push for stronger ties with emerging economies and its broader narrative that the balance of global power is undergoing a historic transformation.
