Xpeng Begins Mass Production of Flying Cars and Expands Into Robotics

Chinese electric vehicle innovator XPeng is pushing the boundaries of transportation and artificial intelligence, with plans to begin large-scale production of its flying cars by 2027. The announcement, made by company president Brian Gu, signals a bold step toward a future where mobility extends beyond traditional roads.

Speaking ahead of the Beijing Auto Show, Gu revealed that Xpeng has already received more than 7,000 pre-orders for its flying vehicles, with most demand coming from within China. The company is currently working closely with aviation regulators to secure the necessary approvals, a crucial hurdle before these vehicles can take to the skies commercially.

Xpeng’s ambitions don’t stop at flying cars. The company is also accelerating its efforts in robotics, aiming to roll out humanoid robots by the fourth quarter of 2026. These robots will initially serve in customer-facing roles such as reception and sales, offering a glimpse into how artificial intelligence could soon become a part of everyday human interaction. Over the long term, Gu believes the robotics division could outgrow Xpeng’s automotive business, driven by the wide range of potential applications across industries and daily life.

At the same time, Xpeng is strengthening its global partnerships. Its collaboration with German automotive giant Volkswagen is already gaining traction, with the first jointly developed electric vehicle recently entering mass production. Gu emphasized that there is significant room for deeper cooperation between the two companies, particularly as the global EV market becomes increasingly competitive and interconnected.

In addition to its advancements in personal mobility, Xpeng is also stepping into the autonomous driving space. The company plans to begin robotaxi testing in Guangzhou this year, with expectations to produce hundreds, and potentially thousands, of autonomous taxis within the next 12 to 18 months. By 2027, Xpeng aims to expand these trials globally through strategic partnerships.

As the race to define the future of transportation intensifies, Xpeng is positioning itself at the intersection of electric vehicles, autonomous driving, and robotics. With flying cars, humanoid robots, and robotaxis all in development, the company is not just building vehicles—it is shaping a new vision of how people and technology will coexist in the decades ahead.
