Russia has signaled its readiness to supply India with as much oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as it needs, reinforcing a strategic energy partnership that continues to grow despite mounting global pressures.
Speaking on the evolving relationship, Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, expressed confidence in the strength and continuity of ties between both nations. He highlighted ongoing cooperation across key sectors including energy, defence, and multilateral engagement, describing the partnership as both resilient and forward-looking.
As part of this deepening relationship, Russia is expected to play a prominent role in the upcoming BRICS Summit scheduled to hold in India in September 2026. Alipov confirmed that Vladimir Putin is anticipated to attend the summit, underscoring the importance Moscow places on its engagement with New Delhi. The event is expected to focus on issues such as global governance reform, trade, investment, and counter-terrorism.
Diplomatic exchanges between the two countries also remain active, with India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expected to visit Russia later this year as part of the long-standing annual summit mechanism that keeps bilateral relations on track.
At the heart of the partnership is energy cooperation, which has grown significantly in recent times. India’s imports of Russian oil have surged, reflecting both competitive pricing and shifting global supply dynamics. With disruptions affecting key routes like the Strait of Hormuz, Russia’s offer to meet India’s full energy demand comes at a critical moment.
However, the strengthening “energy bridge” between the two nations is unfolding alongside increasing geopolitical complexity. The United States has recently ended a sanctions waiver, raising the stakes for countries engaging in Russian energy trade. This development introduces new diplomatic and economic considerations for India as it navigates its relationships with both Moscow and Washington.
Despite these challenges, Russia’s willingness to provide oil at discounted rates has made it an attractive option for India, especially as global energy markets remain volatile. The partnership is increasingly seen as a key factor in helping India manage economic pressures and maintain energy security.
