Nine Killed in Fresh Benue Attack as Fear Grips Communities

Tension has once again gripped parts of Benue State following a deadly attack that reportedly claimed the lives of nine villagers in Ankpali Edikwu, a community in Apa Local Government Area.

According to local sources, the incident occurred on Sunday evening when suspected armed herders stormed the village, opening fire indiscriminately. A community leader, Bernard Ekah, described the нападение as sudden and unprovoked, stating that the attackers shot at residents on sight, leaving multiple casualties and forcing many to flee for safety.

The latest violence has deepened fears among residents, many of whom are still dealing with the aftermath of a similar attack on the same community last year. For survivors, the recurrence has not only reignited trauma but also raised concerns about their safety and the ability to prevent further assaults.

The attack is part of a broader pattern of insecurity affecting several parts of the state, with communities in Gwer West, Otukpo, and other local government areas also experiencing repeated violence in recent months. These incidents have led to displacement, loss of livelihoods, and growing anxiety among residents.

Reacting to the development, Governor Hyacinth Alia strongly condemned the attack and called for urgent action. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor directed security agencies to intensify operations aimed at flushing out armed groups operating from forested areas across the state.

He emphasized that these criminal elements have continued to exploit remote forests as hideouts and launchpads for attacks, stressing that decisive action must be taken to dismantle such camps and restore peace.

Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command acknowledged ongoing security challenges in several parts of the state, including Apa and neighboring local government areas. However, the command did not confirm the specific details of the Sunday attack.

In its response, the police highlighted efforts to strengthen security through the deployment of tactical teams and targeted operations in vulnerable communities. Authorities noted that these actions have led to some progress, including the recovery of weapons and disruption of criminal activities.

The police also warned against the spread of misinformation, urging residents to rely on verified sources for updates. Additionally, they issued a strong caution against cattle rustling and related activities, linking them to cycles of violence and reprisals that continue to destabilize communities.

As Benue faces yet another tragic episode, the focus remains on restoring calm and preventing further loss of life. For many residents, however, the repeated attacks underscore the urgent need for lasting solutions to the state’s persistent security challenges.
