The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old man, Sodiq Kayode Akorede, in connection with the tragic killing of a six-year-old girl in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, the incident occurred on April 11, 2026, in Adigun Village, located in the Olorunda Ogunsola area of Ibadan. The victim was identified as Mutiyatu Sunday.
Police authorities revealed that the suspect was apprehended following credible intelligence linking him to the crime. Acting swiftly on the report, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, ordered the immediate deployment of operatives to the scene.
Officers reportedly arrived promptly and carried out the arrest despite facing resistance from an angry mob. The police emphasized that the situation was handled professionally, with both the suspect taken into custody and critical evidence secured.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect was found in possession of items connected to the crime. Authorities also disclosed that he has confessed during interrogation. Following injuries sustained during the mob attack, he was taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The suspect is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The police command used the opportunity to caution residents against resorting to mob justice, stressing that such actions can obstruct investigations and undermine the pursuit of justice. They reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that the case is thoroughly handled in accordance with the law.
