US Enforces Visa Ban on Religious Freedom Violators in Nigeria

The United States government has begun enforcing new visa restrictions targeting individuals involved in violations of religious freedom, reinforcing its position against persecution worldwide. The move sends a strong message that those found responsible for suppressing religious rights will not be granted entry into the country.

This development was confirmed by Mark Walker, who shared the update publicly, emphasizing that the policy is already in effect. According to him, the restrictions apply to individuals who have played a role in directing, authorizing, funding, or actively participating in acts that infringe on religious freedom.

The policy was originally announced in December by Marco Rubio and is rooted in Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. It also provides the authority to extend these restrictions to immediate family members of those implicated, depending on the circumstances.

Officials say the enforcement of this measure is part of a broader effort to ensure that individuals linked to religious persecution are held accountable beyond their home countries. By denying them entry into the United States, the government aims to increase pressure on perpetrators while promoting global respect for religious rights.

The announcement has drawn particular attention to Nigeria, which was identified among nations of concern. Rubio had earlier indicated that the restrictions could apply to both government officials and private individuals connected to violations of religious freedom in Nigeria and elsewhere.

This policy direction follows growing international concern over reports of rising religious violence in parts of Nigeria. The issue was notably highlighted during a briefing by U.S. lawmakers, convened under the directive of Donald Trump, who previously condemned the killings of Christians in the country and called for stronger action.

With this latest step, the United States is positioning itself as firm on protecting religious liberty, using immigration policy as a tool to discourage abuses and promote accountability on a global scale.
