President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an immediate increase in salaries for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, alongside the payment of three months’ salary arrears, in a move aimed at improving the welfare of troops and strengthening the country’s security operations.
The development was confirmed by Bello Muhammed Matawalle, who revealed that military personnel have already begun receiving payment alerts reflecting the new salary adjustments and arrears.
The announcement came during an interfaith breaking-of-fast gathering with members of the armed forces at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The event provided an opportunity for the government to acknowledge the sacrifices of soldiers and reaffirm its commitment to supporting the military amid Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff at the event, the Olufemi Oluyede expressed appreciation to the president for approving the upward review of salaries and allowances for military personnel, including those serving in the elite Brigade of Guards responsible for protecting the presidency.
Military leadership emphasized that the new welfare measures go beyond salary adjustments. According to the defence chief, the approvals also cover improvements in military allowances, enhanced procurement of modern equipment, and the provision of better housing for soldiers and their families.
These measures are expected to boost morale among troops who are currently deployed across the country to tackle security threats such as terrorism, banditry, and insurgency. With many soldiers operating in difficult and dangerous conditions, improved welfare is seen as a critical step toward strengthening operational effectiveness.
Addressing the gathering, President Tinubu praised the courage and dedication of Nigerian soldiers, acknowledging the sacrifices they make in defending the country’s sovereignty and protecting its citizens.
He noted that many service members spend long periods away from their families while confronting armed groups across various parts of the country. The president expressed gratitude on behalf of the nation and assured the troops that their sacrifices are recognized and valued.
Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the military through continued investment in modern equipment, intelligence capabilities, and operational logistics. According to him, these improvements are essential to ensuring that the armed forces remain capable of responding effectively to evolving security threats.
The president added that recent military operations have already made progress in weakening terrorist and bandit groups in several regions, although significant work still remains to restore lasting peace and stability.
Beyond security matters, Tinubu used the occasion to thank Nigerians for their patience as the government implements ongoing economic reforms. He stressed that the sacrifices being made by both citizens and members of the security forces are part of the broader effort to move the country forward.
During his remarks, the president also extended condolences to the government and people of Borno State following a recent terrorist attack in the region, reaffirming the government’s determination to defeat insurgency and ensure the safety of communities across the country.
The newly approved salary increase and welfare improvements are widely seen as a significant step toward boosting troop morale and reinforcing the military’s capacity to respond to Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
