China Reveals Ambitious Plans for Futuristic Space Warship Capable of Launching Missiles and Unmanned Jets

China has unveiled striking new concept plans for a futuristic space warship that appears straight out of a science-fiction movie, signaling Beijing’s long-term ambition to dominate both air and space warfare.

State media on Tuesday released a computer-generated video showcasing the proposed “Luanniao” carrier, a massive craft designed to operate at the edge of Earth’s atmosphere. The animation depicts the triangular-shaped vessel racing through near space, launching hypersonic missiles and deploying multiple unmanned fighter jets in coordinated maneuvers—imagery that has drawn widespread comparisons to the Star Wars franchise.

According to Chinese reports, the Luanniao would stretch nearly 800 feet in length, making it the largest warship of its kind ever envisioned. The design reportedly allows the carrier to transport up to 88 unmanned “Xuan Nu” fighter jets, dramatically expanding China’s capacity for long-range, high-altitude military operations. Officials claim the platform could one day conduct missile strikes from near space while serving as a mobile launch base for autonomous combat aircraft.

The project is being developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) and is described as one of the country’s most ambitious aerospace initiatives. Chinese media suggest the Luanniao could become operational within the next three decades, aligning with Beijing’s broader strategy to advance cutting-edge military technologies and strengthen its position as a global aerospace power.

Despite the bold vision, defence analysts outside China have expressed deep skepticism. Many argue that the technology required to build and operate such a platform simply does not exist today. Peter Layton, a defence expert and visiting fellow at Australia’s Griffith Asia Institute, dismissed the proposal as largely aspirational. Speaking to the UK’s Telegraph, Layton said the concept appears aimed more at signaling technological dominance than presenting a realistic military roadmap.

“For external audiences, it creates the impression that China is developing capabilities others can’t even dream of,” Layton noted. “It’s essentially ‘Star Wars’ technology.” He added that a craft of this scale would require enormous amounts of fuel and propulsion systems far beyond current engineering limits.

While the Luanniao may remain a distant concept, its unveiling highlights China’s growing focus on integrating space, airpower, and unmanned systems into future warfare. Whether the project becomes reality or remains a symbolic show of ambition, it underscores how competition in advanced military technology is increasingly moving beyond Earth’s surface and into near space.
