The Nigerian music industry has been thrown into mourning following reports of the death of Afrofuji star Afeez Adesina, popularly known as Destiny Boy. The young artiste was said to have passed away at the age of 22 in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
Destiny Boy rose to fame as one of the brightest young voices redefining Fuji music for a new generation. Known for his unique fusion of traditional Fuji rhythms with modern sounds, he carved out a distinct identity at a remarkably young age and quickly became a standout figure in Nigeria’s evolving music scene.
His journey into entertainment began in Agege, Lagos, where he honed his craft at T2 Boys Studios. Before stepping fully into the spotlight as a recording artiste, Destiny Boy worked as a backup dancer for veteran Fuji musician Pasuma. That early exposure to the Fuji music world played a major role in shaping his sound, confidence, and commanding stage presence.
National attention came in 2019 when Destiny Boy released a Fuji-inspired cover of Davido’s hit song If. The rendition struck a chord with audiences across social media, going viral and earning him widespread recognition. The success of the cover opened doors within the industry and established him as a promising talent with the ability to blend tradition and contemporary appeal seamlessly.
Following his breakthrough, Destiny Boy went on to release several songs that resonated with fans, especially among young listeners who embraced his energetic style and cultural authenticity. Tracks such as Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan, and Lowkey helped solidify his growing reputation as a rising force in Afrofuji music.
News of his reported death has sparked an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues, many of whom have taken to social media to celebrate his talent and mourn a life cut tragically short. Though his career was brief, Destiny Boy’s impact on the Afrofuji genre and his role in bringing Fuji music closer to mainstream youth culture remain significant.
