Nigeria’s Minister of Defence nominee, Gen. Christopher Musa, has issued a strong warning about rising instability across the Sahel, stressing that Nigeria must act decisively to prevent similar threats from spilling into its borders.

Speaking before the Senate, Musa said the growing insecurity in the region — especially the escalating crisis in Mali — is a clear reminder of what could happen if Nigeria fails to reinforce its defences.

According to him, the Sahel is “heating up,” with extremist activities and cross-border threats intensifying at an alarming rate. He noted that the situation in Mali serves as a stark example of how quickly instability can consume a nation when borders are porous and security forces lack sufficient support.

“We do not want that situation to come to Nigeria,” Musa told lawmakers, emphasizing that the country must urgently strengthen its border security architecture. He added that Nigeria’s military and security agencies need enhanced funding, modern equipment, and consistent support to effectively safeguard the nation.

The Defence nominee underscored that Nigeria’s stability depends heavily on its ability to detect, deter, and dismantle threats before they enter the country. As insecurity continues to evolve across West Africa, his message to the Senate was clear: proactive reinforcement of national defence is no longer optional — it is a necessity.
