A drone attack on the Khor Mor gas field in Chamchamal has triggered a massive power crisis across the Kurdistan Region, causing an immediate collapse of nearly 80% of electricity generation.

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Electricity confirmed the shutdown late Wednesday, describing the situation as one of the most severe disruptions the region has faced in recent years.

According to ministry spokesperson Omed Ahmad, the impact of the strike is both widespread and crippling. “The attack on the Khor Mor gas field has reduced electricity production by about 80%. The small amount of remaining power will be distributed equally across cities, water projects, hospitals, and other essential areas,” he told Kurdistan24.

Ahmad emphasized that with gas production entirely halted, the ministry cannot meet public electricity demands. “In the current situation, where gas production at Khor Mor has been stopped, we do not have sufficient electricity to distribute to everyone until gas production returns to normal,” he said.

The shutdown of the gas field — the largest natural gas project in the Kurdistan Region — has resulted in widespread outages, including major disruptions in Sulaimani and surrounding areas. Power stations dependent on Khor Mor’s supply have come to a standstill, forcing authorities to implement emergency rationing measures to maintain essential services.

The attack underscores the region’s vulnerability to disruptions targeting key energy infrastructure, raising urgent concerns about energy security and stability. Authorities are yet to provide details on the drone’s origin or ongoing investigations.
