Thousands of Syrians have taken to the streets in major peaceful sit-ins across several cities, including Latakia, Jableh, Tartus, Homs, and Hama, in one of the largest waves of public demanding a decentralized political structure.

In Latakia — the coastal stronghold of Syria’s Alawite minority — tensions intensified as security forces fired shots to break up two rival groups of demonstrators. The country has experienced repeated episodes of sectarian tension since longtime leader Bashar al-Assad, an Alawite, was ousted last year by a rebel offensive and replaced with a Sunni-led government.

Witnesses reported that hundreds of Alawite demonstrators gathered in Latakia demanding a decentralized political structure and calling for the release of detainees they believe were unfairly held by the new authorities. Shortly after, government supporters assembled nearby and began shouting insults at the Alawite group, triggering clashes that prompted security forces to intervene.

The latest protests highlight deepening divisions and mounting frustration across the country as Syrians continue to press for political reform and justice for detained citizens. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the shootings or the number of injured protesters.
