Germany is set to significantly upgrade its military strength with the planned purchase of 75 state-of-the-art Leopard 2A8 tanks, marking a major step in modernizing the Bundeswehr’s armored fleet. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed that the government is preparing an official proposal to finalize the acquisition in 2025.
The Leopard 2A8, the latest and most advanced variant of the renowned Leopard series, has emerged as the leading candidate to replace older versions currently in service.
The move aligns Germany with a growing number of European nations — including Lithuania, Sweden, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Croatia — that are also adopting or planning to integrate the Leopard 2A8 into their military arsenals.
Costing approximately $23 million per unit, the Leopard 2A8 brings substantial upgrades to the battlefield. The tank features next-generation multilayer armor, enhanced protection against mines, the cutting-edge Trophy active defense system, and advanced 360-degree sensors that improve situational awareness for operators.
The planned acquisition underscores Germany’s commitment to strengthening its defense posture amid evolving security challenges across Europe. The proposal, once approved, will pave the way for the Bundeswehr to begin replacing aging armored units with more modern, technologically superior platforms.
